Main Stacks @ Collaboration & Breakthrough Dance Competition 2012

HOWDY Y’ALL?! It’s a new semester and MAIN STACK-A-LACKS is hungry!!

On March 17th, Main Stacks made our way to the San Ramon Performing Arts Theater for our first competition of the season: Collaboration 2012 Urban Dance Competition and Showcase!

Marc Ampon A lone ranger waits to hit the stage!

Work them skirts ladies! (THANKS MISH!!!)

After a few long and hard weeks, Main Stacks was ready to debut our new Wild Wild West themed set! We practiced and prepared for our new set containing quick (and I mean quick) changes and bigger and badder props! After checking in, teching, and a little bit of practicing… what other way to relax than to do what we do best: EAT! We all made it to a nearby plaza and grabbed some grub!

After dinner, we had the opportunity to watch the other teams up close; we took turns running our sets for each other before we went on deck! All the teams really brought their A-game! After the performance, we all congratulated each other for finishing another fun set. As the dancers were called to the stage, Main Stacks made an entrance!

Wild Wild Stacks Ponies? Present!

We had a great time performing and would like to congratulate all the winners (3rd: Beta 010; 2nd: Academy of Thugs; 1st GoodFellas)! Main Stacks  went home with the Best Costume award!!

We would like to thank Greg Chapkis and the entire Chapkis Dance family for hosting yet another great competition!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This past weekend, Main Stacks went all the way to Stockton, CA to compete at the 4th Annual Breakthrough Dance Competition! Coming in as last year’s second place winners, we were all really anxious and excited to return. We were also excited to know that Team Velociraptors (another UC Berkeley dance team) was performing as an exhibition team! To keep up the tradition, all of Main Stacks met up at Sonics right before we arrived at the venue. We held it down and had a blast as we ordered some of their famous drinks and a lot of food from their award winning menu! After our short stop, we all arrived at San Joaquin Delta College.
#sorryboutit
We utilized our time by running and practicing our set at the parking lot along side other dance teams like the Hungry Family and VIP SJ. The more and more we practiced, the more involved we became as a team– cleaning and really getting into our western counterparts. We could feel the excitement and the pressure to put on a great show just by seeing the amount of people waiting in line to get inside. As the clock continued to countdown, we were all really anxious to perform. Nonetheless, we efficiently ran through tech rehearsal right before getting interviewed by Pacific Rim Video!
After a long day of hard work, we finally had time to chill… meaning we had time to EAT! After a few hours of relaxation and team bonding, we watched another UC Berkeley team hit the Breakthrough stage. Big shout outs for Team Velociraptors for getting two Honorable Mentions from Nicole Lewis and Can Nguyen! UC Berkeley represent!
Before we knew it– it was almost time for us to perform! A few minutes after warming up and going through our set outside, our runner told us it was time to go backstage. The adrenaline and excitement immediately rushed through our veins. It was time to show the audience how hard we had been working these past weeks. It was finally our time. “Everyone… let’s give it up… for MAAIIN STACKS!!”
The performance felt so quick, but we definitely felt the crowd!  More importantly, we really felt the energy being passed on to one another on stage. We did what we did best… WE LIVED!!!  Directly following our performance was the Award Ceremony. Alongside our ponies, we were so thrilled to find out that we took home four awards: Judge’s Honorable Mention, Best Theme, Best Costume, and….FIRST PLACE WINNERS OF BREAKTHROUGH 2012!!! Our team felt so honored and humbled to receive all of these awards. Thank you once again to Rhythm Inc. for hosting another successful dance competition!
NEXT UP: WORLD OF DANCE LOS ANGELES!!!
STACKS CLASS: Spring BREAK IT DOWN w/ Marc Ampon & Cherilyn Acorda
Looking for something to do over Spring Break? The weather got you down? Then you DEFINITELY need to mosey on over to BERKELEY and Spring BREAK IT DOWN this FRIDAY with Marc Ampon & Cherilyn Acorda from MAIN STACKS!!!
Meet MARC AMPON:
Marc started dancing later at the age of 22. Inspired mainly by the nightlife dance scene in San Francisco, he eventually took up a simple college hip hop dance course, and took off from there. Marc first joined Wrawsome in 2008, spent a good deal of time there and jumped around between that and VIP San Jose, as well as a very short stint with Phoenix Dance (Directed by Jekka Jane). Between 2009 to 2011 Marc took the honor of being apart of Wrawsome’s Artistic Panel, helping them place second at Battlefest 360, as well as a third place title at Collaboration. Now he dances with Main Stacks in Berkeley, traveling from San Jose to Berkeley three times a week just to pursue a deeper understanding and growth in dance.
Meet CHERILYN ACORDA:
Cherilyn Acorda fell in love with performing and dance at a young age, singing and dancing tap and jazz since the age of 4. But she was not introduced to hip-hop dance until her freshman year of college when she decided to join PCN Modern for fun.
Little did she know she would fall in love with this form of dance and eventually join the first year of Summer Stacks after her sophomore year. The following fall semester, Cherilyn auditioned for Main Stacks and the rest is history. Through Main Stacks, Cherilyn has grown as a dancer and overall performer, and learned so much about hip-hop through the competitive dance scene. She has had the opportunity to learn various styles and the different ways the body can move from her teammates and neighboring dance teams as well. Cherilyn is excited to step to the new realm of choreography, and hopes that you can join in and grow with her on this journey.
STACKS CLASS SPECIAL EDITION: SASS CLASS w/ Jaymie Ngov & JP Quiocho
Test your fierceness at our first ever STACKS CLASS SPECIAL EDITION: SASS CLASS with our very own JAYMIE NGOV & JP QUIOCHO!
Friday, March 16, 2012
6:00 – 7:30 P.M.
The Works Studio
$10 General
$8 w/ Student ID
Meet JAYMIE NGOV:
Jaymie fell in love with the art of dance during his first semester of college. He never knew that dance would become one of his very many passions in life. Starting with The [M]ovement in the Spring of 2009, Jaymie quickly grew to become the dancer he is today. And now, he is the reigning queen in all of Berkeley. Jokes aside, he used his training from The [M]ovement, TruElement, and Main Stacks to develop his own person style in dance and movement. Some call him The Queen, some call him Jamal. But in the end, he is just good ol’ finger snappin’, hair whippin’, fierce and sassin’ Jaymie Ngov.
Meet JP QUIOCHO:
JP Quiocho started dancing in high school, pioneering in SGHS’ first boys’ dance team. Since then, he started taking on other genres like ballroom, jazz, and Filipino folk dancing. It wasn’t until he came to Berkeley when he started dancing hip hop again with [M]ovement his first semester. After a year of training, he tried out for Main Stacks and fatefully got accepted. Main Stacks has taught him so much more about dancing and choreographing, which he exercises when volunteering to teach workshops or when leading his team as PCN Co-Modern head. Dancing has been an integral part of his life and it will continue to be as it serves as a break from stress, an exercise, and a passionate activity that he can share with the friends he’s made.
MEET PAUL JUCABAN:
Paul Jucaban has been in love with dancing since he was a child with his parents making him dance at his own birthdays. His first involvement with the socal dance community started in 2005 going to competitions and being inspired by teams such as CADC, Gen2, and Pac Modern to name a few. From 2006 to 2008, Paul danced and trained with Common Ground(Irvine) as well as helped direct their junior team Underground. In 2008, he founded and still currently directs his own crew Reality Check, with his two best friends Kayla Mallari and Matt Gutierrez. Currently, Paul has been a member of GRV since 2010 and is also an advisor for the junior dance team The ORGanization, based out of Garden Grove. Although, he is very grateful for every opportunity he has had through dance, it’s the kids he helps direct on ORG that have renewed his passion for dance. Through his various outlets of dance, he has been able to give back to the community he was first inspired by.
Come Take Class with Jimmy Nguyen & Brandon Yang!!
ImageStacks Class this week will be taught by Jimmy Nguyen and Brandon Yang.
We are continuing this month of February of collaborating with various dance groups in the Berkeley dance community to give you a taste of Cal!
——————————————————-
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10th
6:00-7:30 P.M.
The Works Studio
$10 General; $8 w/ Student ID
Brandon Yang (Main Stacks) & Jimmy Nguyen (Velociraptors)
MEET BRANDON YANG:
Brandon started dancing in 2005 with the intention of impressing cute girls. It didn’t work. In his failure, he eventually learned to love dance to express (instead of impress) and he has been dancing ever since. You can often find him dancing in front of Zellerbach on late nights at Lower Sproul (he’s the one always dropping his ipod) or cursing the fencing team as they occupy the rec room in the RSF. Or better yet you can take one of his workshops.
MEET JIMMY NGUYEN:
Originally from San Jose, I grew up with little to none experience in dance. My first exposure came from watching YouTube videos and learning how to do the wave. When I came to Berkeley as a freshman, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to train with The [M]ovement, where my real passion for dancing started. Since then, I have been apart of campus groups such as Danceworx, Cal VSA’s Sriracha, and am currently dancing with the Velociraptors. I enjoy incorporating a lot of isolations into my choreography, but I’m also open-minded to other forms and styles of dance.
CHECK OUT THE NEXT CHOREOGRAPHERS:
FEB. 17TH: Sam Dizon & Alice Hua (Danceworx)
FEB. 24TH: Keisha Soleta & Sammy Go (The Movement)
