Prelude Norcal: Photos, Videos, & Blogs

Prelude Norcal was such a great success! Fortunately, we had the support of our really great sponsors who helped us capture all of the night’s highlights!

FKN Famous: Check out some sick action shots from their staff photographer, Jerry Rodrigo. For future inquires please contact him directly at jerry@fkn-famous.com.

The Opportunity: Ian Hallili and The Opportunity Staff provided great video coverage of last week’s event! If you missed out on all of the great performances of the night, be sure to check out their YouTube Channel. For more information regarding The Opportunity Workshop, visit www.theopportunityworkshop.com.

8Asians: One of our dancers and directors, Denise Chan, partnered up with 8Asians.com to write a Guest Blog Post recapping her experience with Prelude Norcal. Written from the perspective of Prelude Norcal Company Manager, it’s a great behind-the-scenes look at Prelude Norcal; an event 10 months in the making. Check out 8Asians.com for more articles about the Asian American Experience.

Prelude Norcal 2011

After ten months of intense preparation, the day of Prelude Norcal 2011 finally arrived! Still, even on the day of the big event, we needed all the Stacks members to help set-up the big event. Main Stacks members met up early in the morning at Chabot College’s Performing Arts Center at 10:30am to get a head-start on the day!

With all the stacks members (and a few volunteering hands) set-up was able to run smoothly and quickly. Right away, we found ourselves with more than a little extra free time.

We even found some of our ladies of the night doing some last minute advertising for ticket sales. Get it Julia and Bao!

As teams began registering, they were welcomed by amazing Go Team posters made by Main Stacks members! YOU BETTA WERK!

Part of the intent of prelude is to not only give teams from all over California the opportunity to showcase their hard work in a competitive environment, but to also foster friendships and build networks in the hip hop dance community. So team runners introduced “The Team Game” in which teams would take pictures with two members from another team and they would have to do a certain pose in order to win points. The team that was able to take the most pictures won the Team Congeniality award!

We also had a photobooth station filled with fortune teller/Main Stacks props for people –both dancers and audience members– to take pictures with.

Throughout the day, many teams were constantly practicing and getting ready for their big moment on stage.

Once the clock hit 6:00PM, Prelude Norcal 2011 began right away, hosted by the one and only Main Stacks alumni, Huan! And every team, one after the other, began putting themselves out on the stage. Each team showed how hard they’ve been working to earn first place. They brought nothing less than their A game and held nothing back.

After all the teams performed, it was time for the closing ceremony. Everyone ran up to the stage and squeezed together as they awaited the announcement of who would win first, second, and third place.

Congratulations to the winners of first place AND best costume, Kaba Modern!

And also congratulations to iDK on second place and Barkada Modern on third place!

A Maxt Out Weekend

Last weekend, Main Stacks went to SoCal to compete in Maxt Out! Leaving as early as Thursday night after practice, some Stacks members had the chance to enjoy fun places all over LA and Orange County before getting serious for the competition. The first few stops were 85º C Bakery in Irvine and “SO CO PLA!” in Costa Mesa where an unexpected mini-photo shoot took place!

After a long and exhausting day of being models, Main Stacks did what we love to do, besides dancing, eat! Next on our stop, was AYCE Korean BBQ in Garden Grove. *So Much* food! After that, we headed to Rage in West Hollywood to show LA a good time! :]

Day 2 of our SoCal Maxt Out Weekend: It’s Saturday and we been practicing hard to prepare for the next day’s competition. Of course, the only thing to do now is to EATTTTTT again– but this time, with the whole team. <3 It was definitely a great bonding moment.

That’s Allyson Liu looking cute with her plate-o-food. :] Get it!

Finally, we made it to MAXT OUT at the San Gabriel Playhouse!! It was amazing minus the rain. We got the chance to meet other teams as well as compete for the first time in SoCal (Ranier and me). After performing, it felt as if we blacked out because we could not remember a thing– but we knew that we killed it out there! We left everything on stage and it felt so good– definitely a feeling you can’t get anywhere else.

P.S. That’s Brandon Yang b-boying!

During awards, Main Stacks won the Viewer’s Choice Award, which started a month prior to the competition for the most number of Facebook likes on a team photo. THANK YOU TO ALL OF THOSE WHO LIKED OUR PHOTO! Main Stacks really appreciates your support and your love! Also, congrats to all of the teams that placed (Barkada Modern, 909, and Meccamee) and good job to everyone who competed!

(That’s me and Ranier!)

Although we didn’t win the competition, we all felt like winners at the end of the day because some of the parents made us YUMMYYYY food! It was the best way to end the night– a home-cooked Filipino dinner prepared with love!

Love,

Chapkis Dance Presents: Judgement Day

Main Stacks had quite the  Halloween weekend! Here’s a little overview of what we were up to!

On Saturday, October 29, Main Stacks drove over to Vacaville for the Chapkis Dance’s 8th Annual Halloween Show: Judgement Day.

Here’s Artistic Director, Wil Torres, putting on his costume to give the team a little scare upon arrival

Here’s Team Captain, Tiffany Wong, directing us as the Main Stacks cars rolled up!

After everyone got ready and we were almost up to perform, we played a little game of Ninja!

Here is our winner and official Team Ninja, Jules Melendez!

As always, Chapkis Dance put on a great show for the friends and family! We all enjoyed it– it was our first performance outside of Berkeley!

Of course, when the day was done, we headed out to do what Main Stacks does best, EAT! On our way back, we stopped by Baldo’s to grub on some Carne Asada Fries and California Burritos!

After Stacks filled their bellies, we headed back down to Berkeley for the night, but not before we had our first social of the year: a Halloween costume party! It was definitely quite the day!

That’s all for now,
David Brill & Samantha Dizon

In 2007, Rogel moved to San Francisco to further build and advance his artistic and leadership skills as a Dance Principal for Funkanometry SF. In his years as a Dance Principal, he has co-directed/choreographed for Funkanometry’s Performance Workshop, Funksters’ Summer Intensive and Funkanometry’s high school outreach after-school programs.
